Los Angeles, California – Today, a federal rule goes into effect that strips Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients of access to health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace. This reversal comes less than a year after DACA recipients were finally allowed to purchase coverage through the ACA Marketplace. Now, that progress has been cruelly undone. With this new rule, the administration has stripped thousands of people of their only pathway to affordable healthcare.
For more than a decade, DACA recipients were unjustly excluded from the ACA. When the Biden Administration corrected that exclusion in 2024, following years of tireless advocacy from immigrant youth, community members and leaders across the country, it ensured thousands could finally obtain coverage for themselves and their families.
In response to this report, the Home is Here Campaign released the following statement:
“Today marks yet another cruel attack on DACA recipients and their families. By stripping DACA recipients of the ability to access affordable health care, the administration is deliberately destabilizing the lives of thousands of parents, workers, and students who are deeply rooted in all of our communities. The administration knows that DACA is strongly supported by the American public, and yet is choosing to chip away at the program piece by piece, finding every opportunity to erode its protections until what will be left of DACA is nothing but a hollow shell.
Make no mistake, this latest rule is a devastating glimpse at what’s to come for millions of working people nationwide. At a time when health costs are skyrocketing, working families are facing existential financial strain, and millions are expected to lose their healthcare coverage over the coming years as a result of the Big Ugly Bill’s massive cuts to Medicare, we demand Congress act without delay to ensure millions of families can live with dignity, health, and stability. We urge them to pass the American Dream & Promise Act now.”
