Florida– In deeply alarming news, the Miami-Herald reported last week that a DACA recipient continues to be held at a remote and violent detention camp in the Florida Everglades, alongside hundreds of others. The individual has lived in the United States for over 20 years.

In response to this developing news, the Home is Here Campaign released the following statement:

“For months, immigrants and allies have sounded the alarms over this administration’s growing campaign to target and abduct thousands of people with callous disregard for their rights and safety. Now, reports that a young man with DACA has been detained at the Everglades detention camp is a blatant betrayal of the promises made to protect those under DACA from the threat of being abducted and disappeared from their families and communities.

No one should ever be denied basic care, access to their attorneys, and held in deeply inhumane detention camps, whether it’s in the Everglades or elsewhere. Human beings do not belong in cages. The Home is Here campaign demands the immediate release of this individual and all people at the Everglades detention camp. We urge our champions in Congress to pressure the administration for answers about any and all actions being taken by immigration enforcement to target DACA recipients.”

The Home Is Here national coalition is fighting to protect DACA recipients, their families, and all immigrant communities at the U.S. Supreme Court. DACA recipients are undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. They are also our nurses, our teachers, our coworkers, our family members, and our friends — and their home is here.
