Washington, D.C. In a public comment submitted by the Home is Here Campaign to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), more than 110 organizations are calling on the administration to rescind its immigration registration rule immediately. This latest rule to force immigrant community members to hand over sensitive personal information, including their location, or face criminal prosecution is reminiscent of shameful historical examples of race- and nationality-based registration requirements in United States history.

The Home is Here Campaign released the following statement:

“This registry is a blatant attempt to coerce millions of immigrants to make an impossible choice: self-identify and risk deportation, or refuse and face potential criminal charges. Like other forced registries in U.S. and global history that led to the shameful discrimination of marginalized communities, or worse, the chilling effect of this rule will extend beyond those directly impacted.

We will not allow fear to be used as a weapon against our families and neighbors. We call on Congress to demand this rule be immediately rescinded and commit to policies that ensure the dignity, safety, and rights of immigrants.”

The Home Is Here national coalition is fighting to protect DACA recipients, their families, and all immigrant communities at the U.S. Supreme Court. DACA recipients are undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. They are also our nurses, our teachers, our coworkers, our family members, and our friends — and their home is here.
