The Obama administration introduced DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, in June 2012 after fierce organizing by and for our communities. DACA protects hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children from deportation temporarily. Under this policy, eligible individuals can also obtain a work permit and a social security number to legally live and work in the U.S. Each DACA approval is valid for two years. Renewal is not automatic.
